Andrés López will be the first Colombian to participate in a production by Universal Pictures and Illumination Studios, lending his voice to the main character in the animated movie The Secret Life of Pets. López will be the Spanish voice of Max, the dog star of the movie.
The Secret Life of Pets, set to open worldwide on July 21, is the fifth collaboration between Universal Pictures and Illumination Studios, which in the past have brought us blockbusters like Despicable Me 1 and 2. This time they come together to present the hilarious story of Max, a spoiled dog whose life is turned upside down when his owner brings home a mongrel named Duke to their Manhattan apartment. They will have to put their quarrels behind when they find out that a bunny named Snowball is building an army of abandoned pets determined to take revenge on all pets and their owners.
The studios set out to find the best comedy talents in Latin America for cast that would give the characters their voices in Spanish. The result is a group of renowned comedians from Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia. The voice of the main character Max was won by Colombian Andrés López, who in 2004 shot to fame with his stand-up comedy act La pelota de letras.
López will perform in this production alongside Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included) in the role of the villain Snowball, and Argentinian actor Martín Campilongo (Masterplan), who will play Duke. The Secret Life of Pets is directed by Chris Renaud, who directed The Lorax and Despicable Me 1 and 2, and by Yarrow Cheney, who has directed the animated shorts Puppy and The Very First Noel.
Andrés López has been recognized as a pioneer in stand-up comedy in Colombia ever since he launched his show La pelota de letras in 2004. In the two years following the show’s debut, López had an uninterrupted run at the Teatro Nacional and took his show on a national and international tour. In 2005, he released the DVD of the show, then followed up with the DVDs Me pido la ventana in 2007 and Me pido la ventana con frutica picada in 2008, both accompanied by international tours.
In 2013, he opened his live production Llegar a Marte, which he also took on an international tour. His tours have taken him to destinations such as the United States, Venezuela, Spain, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Aruba, Australia, and Argentina.
In addition to his success as a comedian, López has starred in the films De Rolling por Colombia (2013) and De Rolling por Colombia 2 (2014), directed by Harold Trompetero and featuring actors such as Jimmy Vásquez and Natalia Durán.
