This river port located on the great Magdalena River only a few kilometers from where the river runs into the Caribbean, is home to 1 million inhabitants. Barranquilla was founded in 1629 and has preserved many beautiful early 20th-centry buildings and centenary constructions as well as entire neighborhoods of Republican-era mansions such as the El Prado neighborhood. The city is one of northern Colombia’s cultural and university centers. The much celebrated Barranquilla carnival was also granted World Heritage status and is one of the oldest of its kind in South America and famous for its beautiful parades, joyful people and the wealth of rhythms and music contributing to Caribbean folklore.
