Based on the true story of the 33 Chilean Miners whose rescue from the San Jose Mine in Chile in 2010 captivated the world’s attention, THE 33 dramatizes the event, both from the miners’ perspective below and from those of their families and rescuers above. August 5th, 2010 was like any other workday. The men were extracting ore and reinforcing the tunnels in the deepest levels of the mine, nearly 700 meters below ground. Shortly before lunch, the men started hearing loud groans emanating from the mountain, the beginnings of a catastrophic collapse. The central core of the mine, a block twice the size of the Empire State Building, detached pancaking level upon level of the mine. As the dust settles, the men realize that the Ramp‐ the only way in or out of the Mine- is completely gone. They’re trapped and the only food they have is barely enough to last 22 men for 2 days…

Laurence Golborne, Chile’s Minister of Mining, takes over the rescue. Drill after drill fails until finally, on Day 17, nearly two and a half weeks after the collapse, they discover the iconic note attached to their drill bit: “Estamos bien en el refugio, los 33.” The news ripples across the world. Several thousand journalists descend on Camp Hope to cover the ‘miracle in the Atacama desert’. The film explores the extraordinary, never-‐before-‐told stories of what happened below during the first 17 days without contact, as the men battled hunger and starvation, and how they banded together and managed to survive. The film dramatizes, beat by beat, the steps involved in what became one of the largest rescue operations in history, and the monumental challenges the miners and the rescuers had to overcome, both technically and psychologically. THE 33 is a story about faith and fate, about miracles, and the extraordinary things we can achieve when we put our hearts, minds and souls into it. It’s about the triumph of the human spirit.
