In the small square is the Hermitage of San Laureano, which is one of the 14 Hispanic churches in Tunja. It is the first church built in Tunja by order of the City Council in 1566 and was located on the outskirts of the city, on the road to Santa Fe. By 1816, it was the place where the Independence figures who were executed at the Martyrs’ Wall were buried.
